This page provides an easy to use list, with reviews, of our favorite Christian humanitarian organizations -- ones whose programs have proven effective in helping those who suffer in extreme poverty. Our reviews include a description of each organization’s distinctives, links to key webpages and annual reports, and sources for more detailed information.
For more on how we compiled our list, read Sources and Criteria.
The organizations reviewed on this list are noted for their expertise in applying best practices for “transformational development” – working to empower individuals and build capacity in communities, these organizations labor side by side with the poor to bring about sustainable improvements in basic living conditions. Each brings a substantial focus, expertise, and track record in helping the world’s poorest people work their way towards self-sufficiency. We hope that you’ll find our reviews helpful.
Update, 2025: You will notice that our last major update to our favorites list took place in 2018. As the author is aging out of the intensive review process, it is unlikely that further updates will occur. In particular, it is likely that some of the more detail oriented links provided in our reviews will no longer function. With this in mind, we urge you to use the information in this section to identify "candidates-of-interest" for your own giving program, and then use the ideas and resources shared in our "Sources and Criteria" page (above), along with a thorough reading of the organization's website, to further refine your choices.
(For what it's worth, the author continues to enthusiastically support the work of World Vision (particularly their "Thrive" Economic Empowerment Program), Plant with Purpose, Hope International, and Opportunity International.)
