The Only Way

I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

In chapter 1 of John's Gospel, Jesus is presented as the name and embodiment of God’s grace.  The apostle Peter observes in Acts 4:12 that "there is no other name given under heaven by which men can be saved."  Or put another way, those that will not entrust themselves to God's grace simply CANNOT be saved.  Grace, in that no mere act of man can secure a place with God; such a thing simply cannot be earned, only given, and that undeservedly…  Grace.

To grasp this more clearly, consider the universe in its unimaginable vastness and intricate detail.  Now imagine God, the Creator and Sustainer of this vastness and detail.  Consumingly powerful, blindingly perfect.  How would you approach Him… Could you even approach Him… Much less relate to Him, even live with Him?  Kind of out of our league, isn’t He?

The only possible way would be if He permitted your presence, invited it, right?  This would be an act of Grace on his part, in that there is absolutely nothing you could do to earn this privilege…

It requires Grace.  Grace is the only way for a human being to stand before, and certainly, to commune with, the God of the entire universe.  Perhaps John 14:6 is less a claim to religious exclusivity, and more of a rational statement of simple natural fact.

The simple truth is that there is no other way in which we can approach (the way), relate to (the truth), or live with (the life), a consumingly powerful and blindingly perfect God…  only by grace – unmerited favor, unearned standing, undeserved elevation.

Grace, established and secured for all time in Jesus:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
